„Good Governance in Sport“ – Conference resume
On 17-18 September, EU Athletes and UNI Europa Sport assembled more than 35 representatives of athlete trade unions in Nicosia Cyprus for a conference on “Good Governance in Sport”. The two day seminar was part of a EU funded project titled “FOCUS ON ATHLETES” which delivered another seminar on Anti Doping last May and features a working condition survey and athlete information packages on the issues of Anti Doping, Dual Careers and Match-Fixing.
The participants, who arrived at Cyprus at the dawn of the EU Sport Forum from 16 European countries, represented more than 30 player associations or national federations of player associations in the various sporting disciplines.
Good governance in sport – a subject at the center of European sport politics – affects athletes and their representatives to a great extent. The organizers therefore assembled three high-level speakers to an in depth panel session: Sylvia Schenk of Transparency International, John Abbott of Interpol and Sarah Lacarriére of SportAccord. The presentations were accompanied by active exchanges with and amongst the participants. The conference concluded with two working groups on principles of good governance in sport and the role of athletes and athlete unions as well as dual career and career transition for athletes.
EU Athletes and its members have been active in the education of sportspeople on the risks of sports-betting and match fixing for more than two years in a partnership with the EGBA and ESSA. The program based around a Code of Conduct developed amongst player associations and face to face education sessions with athletes continues to be a highly efficient and successful program.
